Parents say Richmond Hill Primary in Leguan needs more teachers

Parents of the Richmond Hill Primary School in Leguan say that a shortage of teachers at the school is causing their children to be deprived of a proper education.

According to them, the headmistress and another teacher who are currently working there cannot adequately handle the six classrooms and over 100 students.

They told Stabroek News that a third teacher who was attached to the school has left to attend college.

They said too that most of the time the children are left unattended.

The parents are calling on the Ministry of Education to address the issue urgently so that the children would not have to “waste so much time.”

The parents said too: “The teachers would just put work on the board and leave them on their own. We know that the workload is too much for the two teachers.”

They pointed out that “there are lots of vacant houses available and the government should repair them and bring in the teachers from other areas and put them there to live.”

According to a parent, she visited the school earlier this week and was shocked to see the students of Grade One listening to an educational programme on the radio, unsupervised.

She said too that the students are not prepared to sit the Grade Four exams in two weeks and that some of them have been going to extra lessons “to do the same work that they should have been doing in school.”

Contacted, Chief Education Officer, Olato Sam, told Stabroek News that the matter was not brought to his attention but promised to look into it.
