Grove man refused bail on gun, ammo charges

A Samatta Point, Grove resident, who police say took them to where he hid his gun and ammunition during a raid at Blackwater Landing, Essequibo, was yesterday remanded to prison on two charges.

The courtroom of Magistrate Judy Latchman heard that on September 18, Leroy Singh, 27, of 97 Samatta Point, had in his possession a .32 revolver along with 12 matching rounds. Singh, who was represented by attorney Adrian Thompson, pleaded not guilty to both of the charges.

Thompson told the court that police on patrol conducted a raid at a shop owned by his client’s father. He said that during the search the firearm was discovered in a supermarket, which is a public place. Thompson argued that the only reason why the police arrested Singh was because he was in control of the shop at the time. He said the gun and the matching rounds were not found on Singh. Thompson said all these constituted reasons for granting reasonable bail to his client.

However, Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt told the court that Singh was the one who took the police to where the firearm and ammunition were hidden and he gave them the articles. The prosecutor sealed his argument for no bail being granted to the accused by saying that the accused himself admitted to this fact in a caution statement and he told the police that he needed the gun for protection.

After much deliberation, the magistrate remanded Singh to prison and adjourned the matters until September 26, when they are to be heard at Court One.
