Suspected electrical fire destroys house at No. 69 Village

A 46-year old man is now homeless after a fire suspected to be of electrical origin destroyed his two-storey home at Number 69 Village, Corentyne, Berbice on Tuesday night.

Baijnauth Bichan, of Lot 145, Last Street, Number 69 Village, Corentyne, told Stabroek News that he was not at home at the time of the fire but he was informed around 07:30 pm. “Me been one a me friend and then me hear; when me come me see me whole house in fire,” Bichan said. “When me come the fire service did done deh here and the GPL people,” he pointed out.

According to Bichan, although his house is wired there is no electricity as some months ago he was disconnected. However, he explained that when he got home he saw an electrical wire that is attached from his house to the post hanging at the back of his kitchen. “The wire been deh till up to here and the GPL man say this is the wire that cause the fire,” stated Bichan. “The wire been deh up high. When he hear bout the fire and come me see the wire deh down”.

Bichan then explained that he’s been living alone for several years since he separated from his wife. He said, “Me had three bed, sponge, cabinet, fridge”. The man in distress said he had only $5000 cash and he also lost it in the inferno along with his clothes. Bichan is currently staying with a friend. He is asking for the public’s assistance in rebuilding a small home on his lot.
