Man accused of murdering stepfather freed after no-case submissions

After being remanded to prison for just under two years, Inderjeet Sewdhan, hurriedly exited the High Court in Berbice after Justice Franklyn Holder upheld no-case submissions and   ordered the jury   to return a formal verdict of not guilty.

Sewdhan, 22, was accused of fatally wounding his stepfather Deochand Singh, just after the elder man had returned from a wake house in his home village.

The prisoner, represented by attorney at law Tania Warren Clement, in association with Legal Aid Attorney Sasha Roberts, had pleaded not guilty to murdering Singh on August 13, 2014, at Free Yard, Port Mourant, Corentyne, in Berbice.

The formal verdict was as a result of a caution statement attributed to Sewdhan which was deemed inadmissible following a voir dire [a trial within a trial].

The smaller trial was triggered after defence lawyer Clement stated that the investigator, Detective Corporal Dinesh Baichu, did not adhere to the Judge’s Rules with respect to the taking of a statement under caution.
