Rain stalls Hurricanes fightback

CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, CMC – Persistent rain allowed a mere 25 overs on the opening day of the seventh round clash between Leeward Islands Hurricanes and Windward Islands Volcanoes here yesterday.

Rain delayed the start by an hour and returned during the lunch break with Hurricanes having reached 61 for two. With no ease in the weather, umpires called off play at the scheduled tea interval.

In the time available, captain Nkrumah Bonner struck an unbeaten 25 and opener Montcin Hodge, 20 not out. They have so far put on 32 for the third wicket to dig the hosts out of a hole at 29 for two.

Opting to bat first. Hurricanes lost Sherwin Peters in the fifth over of the day for one, caught at the wicket off seamer Kevin McClean at seven for one.

Trinidadian Daron Cruickshank followed for 14 in the 15th over off off-spinner Shane Shillingford before Bonner and Hodge came together to guide the hosts safely to lunch.

Bonner has so far faced 40 balls and counted three fours while Hodge has consumed 61 deliveries in 1-1/2 hours at the crease, and counted two fours.

Hurricanes are coming off their first victory of the Regional first class championship, after beating Jamaica Scorpions last week.
