Jaguars dismissed for 190, drop first innings points

From Clifton Ross in Barbados

Off-spinner Roston Chase’s maiden five-wicket haul allowed the Barbados Pride to ease into a commanding position after dismissing Guyana Jaguars for 190 in their first innings on day two of the Professional Cricket League (PCL) Regional four-day match at the Kensington Oval, Barbados yesterday.

Barbados batting a second time were 71-1 at the close of play an overall lead of 155 with opener Kyle Corbin and West Indies Test player Shai Hope on 28 and 9 runs respectively.

Jaguars left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul (1-12) picked up the wicket of Barbados captain Kraigg Brathwaite who stroked three fours in his 40-ball 33.

The Jaguars who dismissed the Barbados Pride for 274 in their first innings on Friday’s opening day, were given a taste of their own medicine as they too lost all their wickets inside a day after the 23 year-old part-time bowler, Chase, who is also the Pride’s leading run-getter (493), bagged 5-27 from 15.5 overs. Seamers Miguel Cummins (2-51) and Kevin Stoute (1-12) along with debutant Antiguan leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr (1-30) supported well.

In spite of starts from skipper Leon Johnson, who hit seven fours in his top-score of 40, and efforts from Bajan-born Raymon Reifer (36), Tagenarine Chanderpaul (31), Veerasammy Permaul (30) and Anthony Bramble (26), the Jags looked pretty ordinary with the bat.

Their senior top-order batsmen Assad Fudadin (00), Rajendra Chandrika (07)and Vishaul Singh (03) on whom much depended all failed.

With a lead of 81, Brathwaite duplicated his first innings approach as he looked to score quickly before he was caught by Johnson at slip.

Corbin and Hope then forged a decent partnership, playing sensible shots as stumps approached.

Earlier, the West Indies Test opener Chandrika was the first to walk back to the dressing room, caught by Johnathan Carter at second slip off a beautiful out-swinger by Cummins while Fudadin was run out shortly after by the substitute square-leg fielder, Omar Phillips, after attempting a run.

Johnson, fresh off an unbeaten ton against the T&T Red Force, walked out with his side in trouble at 14-2 and immediately cashed in on some loose deliveries from the pacers to pick up a few boundaries.

Fast-bowlers Cummins and Jason Greaves (0-43) swung the ball around from both ends, making life a bit difficult for the two left-handers who were fortunate to survive a few scares.

The team’s 50 came up in the 17th over with a flick down to fine-leg for four by Johnson who was settling in nicely while the more docile Chanderpaul decided to up his tempo, taking three boundaries off the medium-pacer Carter before Phillips completed a good catch at silly point off Chase.

At lunch, Guyana were 83 -3 from 26 overs but when the afternoon session resumed, the defending champs were rocked by the dismissals of their two mainstay batsmen. Cummins landed a huge blow when the tournament’s leading run-scorer Singh, edged behind to stand-in wicket-keeper Hope.

Corbin then held onto an important catch at slip as Stoute claimed the wicket of the Guyana Captain Johnson, reducing the Jaguars to 86-5. Reifer and wicketkeeper Bramble joined forces after the top-order collapsed and the former smashed Chase for the first six of the innings as Guyana went past three figures.

Bramble took a special liking to Greaves who found it difficult to swing the old ball and carved three vicious fours through the backward-point region. Walsh Jr, who was driven for four off his first ball by Reifer, saw Phillips pull off another fine catch to remove the Guyanese glove-man.

Carter then pulled off a one-handed stunner in slips off Chase to remove Reifer on the stroke of tea, reducing Guyana to 173-7.During the final session of the day, Chase mopped up the tail, first removing Permaul who fell to another good catch by Phillips while Devendra Bishoo (05) and Ronsford Beaton (01) were swallowed in slips by Brathwaite and Carter respectfully.

Day three’s action will bowl off at 10:00hrs today.
