Santos solidified their position at the top of the GFA/Stag Beer League, defeating Western Tigers FC 2-1 in the battle of unbeaten sides on Saturday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground.
The youthful Santos side recorded the hard fought win through goals on either side of halftime in the 44th and 86th minutes from Job Caesar and Tyrese Forde respectively.
On target in the loss was Dwayne Ali in the 14th minute. With the win, Santos moved to 12 points from four matches while Western Tigers remain on nine points from four matches.
In a match typified by few chances and many crunching tackles, Western Tigers snatched the lead as Ali stabbed home from within the centre of the box after a goal-mouth scramble following a right side cross.
However, Santos levelled the matchup two minutes before the end of the half as Caesar converted from the penalty mark with a right foot shot into the lower left corner, following a clumsy challenge within the right of the box.
With the second period being reduced to a slugfest, Santos claimed the deserved win four minutes before the end of normal time as Forde slotted home unchallenged into the right corner, after collecting a flat right side cross.
Meanwhile, Riddim Squad and Camptown battled to a 1-1 result in the earlier contest. Raul Adams gave Camptown the lead in the 53rd minute whilst Amos Ramsay levelled proceedings in the 61st minute.
The championship is slated to continue tomorrow at the same locale with another doubleheader.
In the opening fixture at 18:30hrs, Beacons will oppose Santos while Flamingo will tackle Riddim Squad in the feature affair at 20:30hrs.
