RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, CMC – Jamaican Usain Bolt’s historic hat-trick of Olympic 100 metres titles has drawn praise from the country’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
The 29-year-old produced a spectacular come-from-behind victory in Sunday night’s final to win a third straight gold medal at the Olympic Stadium here, and become the first athlete to accomplish the feat.
Holness, who arrived here last Friday to lend support to the nation’s athletes, said Bolt’s “indomitable spirit and focus” was an inspiration to Jamaicans as well as the entire globe.
“Bolt has etched his name as the greatest sprinter the world has ever seen,” he said in a statement.
“Jamaica is fortunate to have a son who inspires so many and ensures our country continues to be the sprint capital of the world.”
Bolt clocked 9.91 seconds to add to his titles in Beijing eight years ago and London 2012, and keep alive his unbeaten streak at major championships.
His victory came just 24 hours after countrywoman Elaine Thompson had conjured up a sizzling run in the corresponding women’s event, to claim her first Olympic title.
Two-time defending champion, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, missed out on becoming the first woman to clinch a hat-trick of titles in the 100m when she finished with bronze.
Holness said both Thompson and Fraser-Pryce deserved special praise.
“I want to make special mention of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce who got bronze and Elaine Thompson who won her first gold medal. Both women epitomise true Jamaican spirit,” the leader said.
The Jamaica government is expected to once again honour Bolt and the national team following the Games here, with Sports Minister Olivia Grange noting that planning was already underway.
“Jamaica will truly honour Bolt and the rest of the team for what they have achieved,” she said.
