Den Amstel regains top position

Den Amstel reclaimed the top position in the Stag Beer-sponsored West Demerara Football Association Senior League after defeating Wales FC 2-0 yesterday at the Den Amstel Community ground.

Gavin Graham opened the scoring in the 16th minute, racing away from his marker down the left flank before crossing the ball fortuitously into the empty net.

Morrison Charles then sealed the result in the 76th minute, lashing a powerful effort which was mistakenly parried into the back of the net by the custodian.

It was the seventh win for the home side who now has 22 points, three points clear of Uitvlugt who sit on 19 points but has played one game less. For the losing team, it was their sixth loss and they remain on eight points and in seventh position.

Meanwhile, Young Achievers are now in third position in the league after defeating Beavers 2-1. Lloyd Prince bagged a brace in the 44th and 64th minute.

For the losing team, Gavin Anderson equalised in the 56th minute. Young Achievers are now on 19 points while Beavers remain on four points and in ninth position.

On Saturday at the same venue Stewartville FC moved into fourth place after defeating Jetty Gunners 2-0.

Paul Hector and Orette Stephenson were on target in the 42nd and 59th minute respectively.

Stewartville now has 17 points while Jetty Gunners are still on four points and in 10th place.

The cagey affair of the fixture coupled with profligacy from both teams in front of goal threatened the first half of being a scoreless affair.

However, Hector made his presence felt three minutes before the halftime break, racing onto a through pass into the centre of the box, before finishing into the right side of the net following a one-on-one situation with the advancing goalkeeper.

Stephenson then sealed the result in a sublime manner 14 minutes into the second period. Lurking inside the penalty box, he unleashed a powerful volleyed strike into the top right corner after latching onto a cross from the left side of the field.
