Terrence Alli National Open boxing c/ships start Friday

The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) will be staging its Terrence Ali National Open Championships this weekend at the National Gymnasium.

So said GBA president Steve Ninvalle who recently gave Stabroek Sport an update.

Ninvalle disclosed that following the hosting of the three day event which starts on Friday, the selection committee of the GBA will convene to shortlist a team to represent the Golden Arrowhead at the Caribbean Development Tournament scheduled for Barbados from December 9-13.

The GBA head then noted that on the last day of the National Open: “We will also be holding a take away lunch to alleviate some debts incurred and to also offset expenses for the team which will be selected for the Barbados championship.”

During the course of the Barbados tourney which will be attended by president of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, a one-star course for referees and judges will be conducted.

“Barbados has already requested the chairperson of our referee/judges panel, Ramona Agard, so she along with three others will be going to Barbados for the one star course,” he said.

Ninvalle then spoke briefly on Dr. Wu’s visit to the region. “Dr. Wu will be visiting Barbados on December 10 and 11.

He is coming to have a meeting with Caribbean presidents to see how much AIBA can assists with the sport in the part of the world,” Ninvalle added:

“The region is elated that we will have a chance to meet and discuss with him.”

Finally, Ninvalle disclosed that Guyana has been invited to an international tournament scheduled for Suriname on November 26. The invitation has been accepted by the GBA.
