Cops hunting suspects in fatal Kaneville house fire

Police are searching for two persons who are wanted for questioning about the Kaneville Housing Scheme fire which claimed the life of an eight-month-old baby on Monday.

According to ‘A” Division Commander Clifton Hicken, based on information received while investigating the suspected arson, one person was arrested and grilled.

Based on the information provided, he added, they are searching for two additional suspects. He disclosed that one of the suspects is a known character.

The early Monday morning fire destroyed the three-bedroom wooden house of Michelle Menezes and claimed the life of her grandson, Romain Seth, who was sleeping in the room where the fire started.

Menezes had told Stabroek News that around 2.00 in the morning she heard dogs barking. “… They running from the front to the back of the house… I get up and went to check but I ain’t see anything. When I turn around to go back into the bedroom, all I hear is boof and see a big ball a flame on the bed with the baby,” she said.

She added that when she ran to the front room to save the baby, she heard “boof, boof in the middle room and the back room,” and sounded an alarm to awaken her four children and her nephew who were sleeping in the other rooms.

At the time of the fire, Seth’s mother, Holly Seth and her older brother were not at home.

The fire destroyed the three-bedroom house that was occupied by Menezes, her six children, her nephew and his common-law wife, and a family friend.

Since then, Menezes and her family have been housed by the Guyana Relief Council. She noted that the Relief Council also provided two beds and mattresses for the family, along with some food items.

Menezes told Stabroek News that she is trying to get school clothes, footwear and stationery in order for her children to resume school.

She added that the Neighbourhood Democratic Council has promised to help with the burial of her grandson, and to assist with the clearing of the debris off the land. However, she stressed that she does not know when she would be able to rebuild a home for her family and is willing to accept any aid from the public. Persons willing to assist Menezes can contact her on 681-4882 or 670-8476.
