There should be changes in the PPP leadership

Dear Editor,

I would like to take this opportunity to ask the PPP leadership (and my fellow PPP supporters) if they believe that while in government the PPP/C was transparent, accountable, practised good governance and showed respect for all people? Why do they believe that the PPP/C lost the May 11, 2015 general elections? Clearly, there is something fundamentally wrong with how the PPP leadership views itself in comparison with how the populace views the PPP, hence the reason for the PPP/C being ousted from government.

The PPP/C has done a lot of good in Guyana. But a lot of bad things happened under the PPP/C stewardship as well. It is time for the PPP leadership and my fellow PPP supporters to come to terms with the fact that overall the PPP/C performance in government after 1997 was abysmal in comparison to the PPP/C pre-1997 (Cheddi Jagan’s PPP).

Hindsight is a great thing if used to objectively evaluate your performance. Using hindsight the PPP needs to commit to practising good governance, being more accountable, being more transparent and showing more respect for all people.

Clearly this cannot happen unless there are significant changes in the PPP leadership. In particular, Bharrat Jagdeo and Donald Ramotar need to bow out gracefully from the PPP so that new blood can be infused into the party. By doing so the PPP will be able to regenerate itself and become a political party that every Guyanese can be proud of come 2020.

Yours faithfully,
Sean Ori
