Applicants for Solicitor-General being assessed – Williams

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Basil Williams SC said on Friday that applications for the post of Solicitor-General (SG) were received from persons living in Guyana and abroad, and that some attention will now have to be paid to offering higher salaries.

Several weeks ago, the search began for a new Solicitor-General. Solicitor-General Sita Ramlal is currently on pre-retirement leave.

Williams told reporters during a press conference at his office that those who applied for the SG job were being assessed. He was asked how many persons applied but he did not provide a number.

He said too that his office was in need of senior people in the top positions to advise the litigation section because there were serious issues arising and the young lawyers were too inexperienced to deal with them.

“We will have to bite the bullet and employ senior people. It might be at a bit higher salary,” he said, while adding that when he took office the SG and the Deputy Solicitor-General were among the highest paid public sector employees and that a dysfunctional office existed because one felt that the other did not deserve the position.
