Calls made for North Road repairs

Vendors and drivers are calling on the authorities to fix a section of North Road approaching the intersection with Orange Walk, which they say is disrupting traffic and causing damage to vehicles.

There are large potholes along the section of the road, with the largest ones immediately before the intersection. As a result, drivers seeking to cross over Orange Walk usually have to proceed with extreme caution and sometimes resort to driving off the road.

“I fail to understand how some of these potholes around this country, especially this one, are left to reach such a point. They act as though these potholes appear one morning just the way they are and remain so. No, they start small and because the people who are responsible for ensuring the road is properly managed refuse to fix them when they are like that and this is what eventually happens,” a driver told Stabroek News on Monday.

The man explained that because he is a taxi driver, he travels on the road multiple times during any given day. “It’s a real issue sometimes because you have to drive very, very careful and that causes a big build up, especially during the peak hours. Even when you do drive carefully, it is impossible to avoid the holes because of how large they are and you eventually drop in sometimes and damage your vehicle,” the man added, while stating that a road that is in “the middle of Georgetown” should not be in such condition.

The road is also used a lot by the drivers of trucks and other vehicles loaded with goods for vendors who sell at the nearby Bourda Market. “It so big that when you does drive through with the truck, you fruits and vegetables does fall out sometimes because of the shake up,” a vendor related.

“This is nah no ordinary road. Is nuff people does deh up and down on this road here and it always busy, so those holes does cause a real hindrance,” the man related.
