A Canefield, East Canje woman is now scared for her life, and has been left with no other choice but to move out from her home, after a man tried to strangle her yesterday morning. The woman suspects the intruder to be a neighbour, who had threatened her several times over the past two weeks.

Charameai Imrit, also known as ‘Lalita’, 60, of Lot 47 West Canefield, East Canje, contacted Stabroek News yesterday and explained that she was fast asleep around 2.30 am yesterday morning, when she was awakened by someone pressing on her chest.

The woman who lives alone said, “He jump top me and put he hand on me throat and ah strangle me fa kill me. Me call on God and say help me fa come out, me say [name of suspect] wah me do you boy, and he say ‘me go show you wah me go do you’ and he ah choke me.”

She said the intruder also used a landline phone cord, which he left behind.

According to Imrit, “Me take me hand, ah dig am from he eye, and then he lose me next hand and me take am and hold he private part and twist am and me start holla [his name] hard, hard.”

She said after she started to scream he jumped through the window and onto her shed, which collapsed with him. She stated that the mother of the alleged intruder then ran over and started to tell her that she was there to “save her,” and that it wasn’t her son but was a “thief man”.

But Imrit insisted, “Me sure ah he. He squeeze up me mouth and press am up, all me mouth cut up inside. Three a me teeth a shake.”

The woman said she and the intruder’s family used to “live good”, until about two weeks ago when because of certain behaviours she told them that she would stop visiting their home.

“Them feel because me na go there and me ah go me brother them, that me ah tell me brother them things about them,” Imrit stated. “That is how come he say he gon chop me up and he gon cut some jail for me.”

Imrit said she will be moving out of the house that she has occupied for some time now and going to live with a relative. “He go come again and this time he gon come fuh kill me. He na come for nothing, he just come to kill me,” she said. “If me put on me light to go toilet he ah cuss me, anything me ah do he ah cuss me.”

Imrit made a report to the Reliance Police Station and the police arrived around 3.15 am yesterday. She said they called for the man whom she suspects, and his mother said he was play wrestling with his brother and his skin was covered in sand.

However, after noticing several bruises that Imrit said she had inflicted on her attacker, the man was placed under arrest. The police are still investigating, and Imrit is calling for the man to face the brunt of the law for his attack on her.
