Airport cop arrested for stealing passenger’s phone

A special constabulary rank, stationed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, was yesterday morning arrested for stealing a phone belonging to an outbound passenger.

Stabroek News was told that the episode unfolded around 7am while the female passenger, who was about to depart for Canada, was going through security checks.

While at the airport security checkpoint, the passenger placed her Samsung Galaxy phone down before proceeding through the scanner. Subsequently, she discovered her phone was missing and raised an alarm. Airport officials were alerted and the police were called in.

An investigation was immediately launched and police reviewed surveillance footage, which recorded the special constabulary rank pocketing the phone.

She was taken into custody.

Although she initially denied the allegation, after further interrogation she admitted to the offence and reportedly told the police that after taking the phone she called her boyfriend, who is a member of the Guyana Defence Force, and handed over the phone to him. The boyfriend was contacted and he handed over the cell phone to the police. Up to last evening, the special constabulary rank remained in custody.

She is likely to be charged soon.
