Cops seek suspect in torching of NA businessman’s vehicles

The police are currently pursuing a man who set two vehicles belonging to a prominent New Amsterdam, Berbice businessman on fire early yesterday morning.

The attack, which was recorded by surveillance cameras, occurred at about 3am yesterday in front the Lot 19 Main and Pope streets, New Amsterdam, Berbice, property of Feroze Ali.

The two vehicles, a Prado, PKK 2035, and a Toyota Camry car, PNN 2062, sustained extensive damages. They were valued at about $22M.

The footage of the attack shows a man, dressed in a grey t-shirt, navy blue jeans and a hat, throwing a liquid substance from a bottle on both vehicles, which were parked in front of the property. The property also houses Ali’s supermarket.

After reviewing the surveillance footage of the attack, a police source said that the suspect was seen throwing a substance on the vehicles before setting them alight and escaping.

Firefighters responded promptly after being called but they were unable to prevent the extensive damage. The reason for the attack remains unclear.

When Stabroek News contacted Ali yesterday, he refused to comment on the incident.

Several years ago, a supermarket belonging to Ali was set on fire and two persons were charged.
