Cops arrest suspect in Bourda Market stabbing

Police have arrested the man who allegedly stabbed 40-year-old Jerome Cumberbatch at Bourda Market on Thursday afternoon.

According to the police, the suspect was arrested early yesterday morning and is currently in custody assisting with the investigation.

Cumberbatch, who was from Half Mile, Wismar, Linden, was known by the vendors as ‘Kunta,’ and would often do odd jobs around the market.

Early Thursday afternoon, Cumberbatch’s body was found in the market with several stab wounds. A broken bottle, which was the suspected murder weapon, was found nearby. While the man was still alive when the ambulance was called, he bled to death on the ground.

The circumstances surrounding the stabbing are unclear and the vendors around the area claimed that they did not see who stabbed the man. Stabroek News was told that Cumberbatch was seen earlier in an argument with another vagrant over money and it might have been what led to his demise.
