Men charged with shooting, chopping each other

Two men were yesterday hauled before a city court to answer to charges of wounding each other after a recent skirmish that left them both hospitalised.

The charges were read to Colin Daly and Reon Jonas, who were recently released from the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Daly, 23, is accused of unlawfully and maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm on Jonas at East La Penitence on May 8. Meanwhile, Jonas, 19, was accused of discharging a loaded firearm, on the very day, with intent to maim, disfigure or disable Daly.

Both men denied the charges. Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves told Magistrate Judy Latchman that Daly was drinking a Guinness when he was approached by Jonas, who fired several shots at him.  The prosecutor said Daly, who was hit in an arm, subsequently went to his cousin’s home, retrieved a cutlass and chopped Jonas several times to his left arm.

Attorney Darren Wade, who represented Daly, told the court that his client currently has a bullet lodged in his right arm. He noted that Daly was also not allowed to seek medical attention since he was arrested. As a result, Wade requested Daly be granted his release on reasonable bail. The court later heard from attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat, who represented Jonas, of Lot 1 Mandela Avenue, that his client was beaten and chopped by Daly. The attorney told the court that the issue between the two arose from a grievance Daly has with his client. On the day of the incident, the attorney claimed, his client was injured and someone in the area at the time discharged a loaded firearm in the air and a round hit Daly in his arm. Fung-A-Fat pressed the prosecutor to prove that it was his client that fired at Daly.

Magistrate Latchman, having heard from both attorneys and from the prosecutor, who objected to Jonas being released but made no objection as it related to Daly, adjourned the matter to June 12.

While Daly was granted his release on $60,000 bail, Jonas was remanded to prison.
