Reasons for pigeon-holing players should be given

Dear Editor,
Badree is automatically excluded from any game over twenty overs, and Narine has played few such games. Blackwood, a naturally aggressive, promising batsman has played few games other than those scheduled for five days. It is easy to understand why Kraigg Brathwaite has not been selected often for the shorter forms of the game. He is a very careful, patient batsman who seems averse to risk-taking, and perhaps his range of shots is limited. Gayle has been very good in all forms of the game while Sammy and Pollard’s strength seems to be in the excellence of their fielding, the speed with which they can score and the relative accuracy of their mediumish bowling, all of which suggest they are more suited to the shorter forms of the game. What troubles me and should trouble fans is that the reasons for pigeon-holing players are never articulated, and therein lies a danger to selecting our best team and possible unfairness to players. It is difficult, for example, to understand why Blackwood should not have the opportunity to play the shorter forms of the game where his incredible speed and general fielding prowess would be tremendous assets, along with his naturally and reasonably successful batting. It is good to see that Chase has been selected for fifty over cricket.

Yours faithfully,
Romain Pitt
