Fisherman accused of $2.6M theft granted $75,000 bail

A fisherman was yesterday granted bail, after he was accused of stealing $2.6 million in items from a businessman.

Patrick Smith stood before Magistrate Fabayo Azore, who read him a charge which alleged that he, between June 11, 2016, and June 13, 2016, at Charlotte Street, broke and entered the business of Varendra Balgobin and stole, a $500,000 television set, $400,000 in gold jewellery, a quantity of BLU and Telego phones, valued at $400,000, 24 pairs of Clarke shoes, valued at $288,000, three Sony television sets valued at $270,000, a $100,000 metal safe, a $90,000 HP laptop, and a $70,000 Sony laptop. These items had a total value of $2,628,000.

Smith, 37 of Albouystown, denied the allegation.

As a result the Magistrate granted the accused $75,000 bail and adjourned the matter to June 28.
