Philipai man charged in alleged revenge stabbing

A Philipai Upper Mazaruni River, who was wounded on November 25, 2015, found himself on the other side of the law on Friday, after he was charged with wounding his alleged assailant.

It is alleged that on January 27 at Philipai, Upper Mazaruni River, Hubert Fredericks unlawfully and maliciously wounded Ramson Thomas. On November 30, 2015 Thomas had been charged with the attempted murder of Fredericks. The status of this case is unknown.

On Friday, Fredericks, who seemed puzzled by the allegation, pleaded guilty to the crime. However, Magistrate Leron Daly subsequently changed the plea to not guilty because of the defendant’s confusion.

According to the prosecution the two men had a previous altercation (in 2015) where Fredericks was stabbed. It was alleged that Thomas had stabbed Fredericks to his stomach with a knife after Fredericks visited Thomas’s home to inquire about a memory card.

January’s altercation saw Fredericks reportedly returning the favour.

Fredericks was later granted $30,000 bail and is expected to make his next appearance on March 20 at the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court.
