Woman succumbs after Herstelling accident

The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding a vehicular accident that occurred on the Herstelling Public Road on Saturday night, which resulted in a pedestrian first losing a leg, and later succumbing to the injuries.

Initially unidentified, police confirmed yesterday afternoon that the identity of the pedestrian, described as a female of African descent who appeared to be in her late forties, was known, but details would not be released as yet.

According to a press release, the woman was hit by a car bearing licence number PKK 3251, which was traveling south along the eastern carriageway of Herstelling, and allegedly speeding at the time of the encounter. The release also said that the woman was allegedly crossing the road from west to east at the time, and walked into the path of the vehicle.

As a result of the collision, the woman’s left leg was severed and she sustained injuries to the head and body. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Hospital, after being transported there in an unconscious state.

The driver, 45-years-old and a resident of  Mocha, East Bank Demerara, was subjected to a breathalyzer test that revealed that there was no alcohol on his breath. He is currently in police custody assisting with investigations and a post-mortem report is being awaited.
