Vending zones demarcated for Mash route

The Ministry of Education’s Department of Culture has moved to institute vending zones on Republic Day in an effort to avoid the congestion experienced during last year’s float parade and aid in crowd control.

Major Hubert Meusa, the department’s Technical Officer, stated that vending would be allowed on the northern side of the Square of the Revolution, behind the southern stands, in front of the eastern stands and along the southern part of Homestretch Avenue.

Along the parade route, which begins at Church Street and Avenue of the Republic and winds its way down Brickdam, vendors will be allowed to set up along the northern section of Brickdam and on the eastern carriageway of Avenue of the Republic.

Meusa explained the new system to a crowd of around 50 vendors gathered at D’Urban Park yesterday. Prior to the arrival of the ministry’s representatives, many vendors had believed that the meeting was targeted toward the placement of those who had not yet acquired vending spaces.

However, it was made known to them that the sale of spots had closed off for now and there will be re-advertisement when sales reopened.
