Turkeyen teen admits armed robberies

A Turkeyen teenager was yesterday slapped with two charges of armed robbery and pleaded guilty while saying he was hungry and under the influence of marijuana.

Mowalie Clarke, 18, of Lot 564, Section D, Turkeyen, Georgetown was read a charge which stated that on July 6 at 52 North Road, Bourda, being armed with a knife, he robbed Saeed Khan of one Samsung Galaxy S5 cellphone, valued at $120,000. Also, on the said date and location, he robbed Joel Ramsaran of one Samsung Galaxy S4 cellphone, valued at $45,000.

Clarke pleaded guilty with explanation to the charges, stating that at the time of the offences he was hungry and also under the influence of marijuana.

According to the facts presented by Police Prosecutor Simone Payne, on the day in question, both victims were proceeding south through a passageway located in the compound of Game Express, when the suspect approached them from behind armed with a knife. The accused then demanded that the victims hand over their valuables to him. The victims handed over their cellphones and the suspect made good his escape.

The matter was subsequently reported to the police, investigations were conducted and CCTV footage was obtained. The suspect was later arrested and charged.

Clarke was refused bail by Magistrate Fabayo Azore and subsequently remanded to prison.

He will return to court on August 2 for sentencing, pending the probationary report.
