Former cop remanded over two armed robberies

A former policeman stood in a city court yesterday to answer to two charges of armed robbery, for items valued at $72,800.

Edwin Broomes, 24,  was brought before Magistrate Leron Daly to answer to the armed robbery charges.

The first charge stated that he, together with others, on July 18, at Campbell Avenue, armed with cutlasses and knives robbed Demetri Charles of one $16,000 silver ring, one $10,000 silver chain, keys valued at $10,000, one $10,000 hard drive, one $5,000 case for a hard drive, and one torchlight valued at $2,500. The items had a total value of $53,500.

It is further alleged that Broomes, on July 18, at Sheriff Street, together with another, robbed Parmanan Heerlal of one $12,000 cellphone and two SIM cards. The items had a total value of $19,300.

The defendant denied both allegations.

Bail was objected to by the prosecution who cited the nature and seriousness of the crimes. The court also heard that the defendant was previously charged for a similar offence.

He was subsequently remanded to prison and is set to make his next court appearance on August 11.
