Sparta Boss was booted from the inaugural Guinness Cage football tournament going down 0-2 to fierce rival North Ruimveldt Thursday at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.

Requiring a victory by a two goal margin to clinch a quarterfinal berth, Sparta Boss was put to the sword by the dynamic duo of Travis Grant and Gerald Gittens, as they suffered an embarrassing first ever group stage exit.

Grant, a former member of the Spartans, broke the deadlock with a finish into the left side in the second minute and Gittens sealed the outcome of the contest nine minutes later.

Meanwhile, Gold is Money, Back Circle, Leopold Street, Ol Skool Ballers and Albouystown-A, stormed their way into the final eight following clinical victories.

Gold is Money downed Hustlers 2-0 on the back of Jamal Pedro’s first-half double in the third and fifth minute while Back Circle whipped Meadowbrook Kings (MBK) All-Stars 4-0.Runnel Gordon tallied a hat-trick in the seventh, 12th and 13th minute, while Selwyn Williams scored in the third minute.

Leopold Street sauntered into the next round with an easy 3-0 defeat of Champion Boys 3-0.

Okeene Fraser, was the hero, netting a hat-trick in the fourth, sixth and 12th minute.

Ol Skool Ballers dismissed Albouystown-B 2-0 via goals from Joel McGarrell and Darrell Quallis in the 14th and 16th minute respectively while Albouystown-A edged Future Stars 2-1 on penalty kicks after the game ended in a scoreless draw at the end of regulation time.

In the final two matches Pike Street and Mocha advanced courtesy of walkovers from Showstoppers and Tiger Bay.

The quarter-finals will be contested this evening.

 

At 20:00hrs, Ol Skool Ballers will oppose Albouystown-A while Mocha will battle Leopold Street at 20:45hrs.

Back Circle will engage Gold is Money at 21:30hrs and North Ruimveldt will tackle Future Stars at 22:15hrs in the final game of the evening.

The semi-finals will be held September 12th and the grande finale September 16th.

The winner of the historic event will receive $400,000 and the championship trophy while the runners-up will pocket $200,000 and the respective trophy.

The third and fourth placed finishers will collect $100,000 and $50,000 respectively and a trophy.

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) will receive a gold chain from Y.K Investments and Pawn Shop and a trophy donated by Trophy Stall.
