Dominica overcome Maria hurdle to attend tournament

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Dominica’s national team have defied the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, to participate in the 2018 FIVB World Championship, Group C qualifying tournament, set to be staged here this week.

Mushtaque Mohammed, president of the Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA), confirmed the attendance of the 13-member contingent for the October 13-14 four-team tournament at the National Cycling Centre.

Dominica’s participation was thrown into serious doubt after Hurricane Maria barreled through the northern Caribbean last month, leaving a trail of destruction in the tiny island and causing over 15 deaths.

Intense relief efforts have since been ongoing, with extensive work being undertaken to restore the vital services of electricity and telecommunications which had been decimated by the Category Five cyclone.

According to the Guardian newspaper here, Mohammed praised the tenacity of the Dominicans in attending the tournament, in spite of the devastation in the country and promised CAZOVA and NORCECA’s help.

The side will travel by ferry to St Lucia and then fly on to Port of Spain.

Dominica open their campaign on Friday against Trinidad and Tobago, clash with powerhouses Mexico the following day before wrapping up against Costa Rica on Sunday.
