Guyana’s table tennis delegation on Friday departed the JFK International airport to participate in the 2018  Commonwealth Games scheduled  for April 4th – 15th  Gold Coast, Australia.

The team should be well prepared after completing an intense training camp in the US under the instruction of 14 times men’s national TT champion and IFFF level one and three coach coordinator, Sydney Christophe.

Before that camp, the team participated in the Westchester Open championships and the Central America and Caribbean qualifying tournament where Shemar Britton and Trenace Lowe were notably Guyana’s top performers respectively.

The duo, along with Christopher Franklin, will also lead the South Americans medal hunt, banking on their recent impressive form and experience.

The feisty Nigel Bryan and Natalie ‘speedy’ Cummings are also expected to spring a few surprises and could find themselves making the headlines.

Guyana, though, will be without female sensation Chelsea Edghill, who, regrettably had to miss the games because of her academic commitments.

Her absence will mainly hurt the local’s prospects of medaling prospects since she recently displayed fine form, serving her way to championship honours in the women’s singles at the St Joseph Gardens Open Table Tennis Championship a few weeks ago.

Her absence nonetheless, presented an opportunity for the 2017 junior Caribbean bronze medalist, Priscilla Greaves to gain some valuable experience on the big stage.

Coach Idi Lewis is tasked with overseeing the team’s medal hunt in Australia. The team will land in Australia today.
