Sprinter, Aliyah Abrams and boxer Keevin Allicock have been named as Team Guyana’s flag bearers for the opening ceremony at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

The two Tokyo 2020 Olympians have been bestowed the honour of leading out Guyana’s 48-member contingent at the 22nd edition of the games tomorrow evening.

For Allicock, the 2022 event will mark his second appearance at the Commonwealth Games following his participation at the 2018 games in Australia.

Keevin Allicock

The 23 year-old featherweight orthodox fighter in 2017 won silver at the Youth Commonwealth Games in The Bahamas.

For Abrams, one of the country’s most consistent track athletes, particularly over the distance of 400 metres, this will be her first outing at the Commonwealth Games.

The 25-year-old jetted off to the games with redemption in mind after her performance at the World Athletics Championships in the Women’s 400m where she reached the semi-finals.

At the World Indoor Championships this year, Abrams finished fifth in the 400m.  The opening ceremony will take place at the Alexander Stadium at 19:00hrs (14:00hrs local time) to mark the start of the Games. Birmingham-born duo Duran Duran will be among those headlining the event, which is expected to be watched by more than a billion people around the world.
