Father of eight on ganja trafficking charge after hotel bust

A 41-year-old father of eight was yesterday remanded to prison for the alleged possession of just over two pounds of ganja.

The charge against Ceon Barker states that on June 3rd, 2018, at 111 Miles Mahdia, Potaro River, he had in his possession 1.030 kg (equivalent to 2.27 pounds) of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Barker denied the allegation.

Police prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that on the day in question, police ranks acting on information received went to a hotel and made contact with Barker, who was the known occupant of Room 205. A search was conducted and two parcels, wrapped in clear plastic, were found in a multicoloured haversack. The parcels contained leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis. Barker was told of the offence and he admitted being the owner of the haversack but stated he had no knowledge of the narcotic.

The prosecutor objected to bail being granted, while stating that no special reasons were stated in the facts presented.

As a result, acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus refused bail and adjourned the matter until June 15th.
