Former Georgetown Mayor Ranwell Jordan has died.
He was 79.
Jordan, who served as Mayor from 1995 to 1996, died on Thursday.
He spent over 21 years as a city councillor after being elected in 1994.
In a statement, current mayor Patricia Chase-Green, Councillors and Officers of Georgetown City Council expressed their sadness at his sudden passing.
It noted that as a member of council he served on the International Relations and City Works committees and was Council’s representative on Central Housing and Planning Authority Board and the Guyana Cricket Board until 2016.
“Georgetown has lost a true son of the soil. We salute his commitment to local government reform and local democracy and express sincere condolences to his children, relatives and other grieving friends,” the statement concluded.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued yesterday, President David Granger extended heartfelt condolences to Jordan’s family on his passing.
The statement noted that Jordan, a Justice of the Peace and Commissioner of Oaths, lived a life of service to his community and the city of Georgetown.
It also said he was also a long serving member and stalwart of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and an active member of the Agricola/Meadowbrook PNCR Group. It noted that for his long service and dedication to the PNCR, Jordan was awarded the 60th Anniversary Medal at the Party’s Special Congress in October, 2017.
