The Mohabir Mookerchand Persaud Foundation of Excellence yesterday distributed 28 school bags filled with school supplies, ten travel vouchers and three internet vouchers to students in the Corentyne Area.

At a handing over ceremony yesterday, the MMP Foundation also announced that it will pay the CSEC fees for 100 students, who will be sitting the examinations in 2019. The estimated cost of the foundation’s initiative is $2.5 million.

The foundation was officially launched in 2016 when it paid the CSEC fees for 10 students at the JC Chandisingh Secondary School. The foundation’s first recipient was Mahendra Phagwah who wrote 13 subjects at the CSEC Examination.

In the same year, the foundation carried out rehabilitation works on the female washroom and head teacher’s office and performed a beautification exercise on the school’s compound.

In 2017, the foundation expanded their education funding by sponsoring the CSEC fees for 41 students, providing 19 backpacks filled with school supplies, and providing three students with travel allowances and internet vouchers for one year. A bicycle was also presented to one student to ensure a safer and an easier commute to and from school.

Over the past two years the foundation also sponsored feeding programmes at the JC Chandisingh Secondary School, Port Mourant Secondary School, Lower Corentyne Secondary School, among others, and hosted a debating competition for the secondary schools in Berbice.
