Kobras in comeback win over Plaisance Guardians

Kobras handed Plaisance Guardians their first loss in the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) League Championship, defeating the East Coast Demerara side 74-67 in their 1st Division clash on Wednesday.

The Burnham Court on Carmichael and Middle Streets, provided the backdrop for the unlikely result. Garfield Grenville and Carlos Edwards led Kobras with 17 points each.

They were assisted by the experienced Jermaine Slater with 13 points, while veteran Trevor Smith and Drexel Aaron netted nine and eight points respectively.

On the other side, Nikkoloi Smith tallied a game high 25 points. The duo of Trenton Woolford and Marlon Chesney tallied 14 and 10 points respectively, while Malcolm Powdar and Neetzekiel Yisrael added eight points respectively.

The clash started poorly for Kobras, as Guardians raced off to a commanding 18-9 lead at the end of the first stanza. Guardians maintained their grip on the contest heading into the halftime interval at 37-28, as both teams tallied 19 points.

The eventual come-from-behind result commenced in the third quarter, with Kobras marginally reducing the deficit. The East Bank Demerara unit outscored Guardians 20-19 to enter the final period trailing at 56-48. A fourth quarter offensive blitz then sealed the result for Kobras, who outscored their opponent 26-11.

Meanwhile, Colts nipped past Eagles 75-74. Shane Webster top-scored for the victor with 16 points, with Jonathan Mangra and Evans Johnson, the next best scorers with 14 and 13 points each.

Chipping in with 10 points apiece were Delon La Rose and Sheldon Thomas. For the loser, Travis Belgrave tallied a game high 23 points.

He was assisted by the quartet of Michael Richards, Ryan Gullen, Nico Fraser and Yoel Meusa, scorers of 13, 11, eight and six points correspondingly. The event continues at the same venue tomorrow.
