After considering an appeal of his conviction and 56-year sentence for the 2010 murder of his childhood friend, the Guyana Court of Appeal yesterday morning overturned both and ordered that Redrick Alexander be retried.
The appeal was heard by acting Chancellor Yonette Cummings-Edwards, Justice of Appeal Dawn Gregory and High Court judge Brassington Reynolds.
On April 3rd, 2014, Alexander was sentenced to 56 years in prison after he was found guilty by a jury of murdering his childhood friend, Carl Thomas.
Alexander was said to have inflicted the fatal stab wound to Thomas’ abdomen during an argument over a pile of missing clothes. The stabbing occurred at John Street, Lodge, Georgetown.
At the conclusion of the trial, Justice Navindra Singh, who heard the case, had sentenced Alexander to 56 years in prison.
The then 61-year-old Alexander had begged the judge to be merciful in handing down his sentence. “I’m innocent of murder. I’m really innocent. I know to my heart is a scuffle me and this man had…,” Alexander had pleaded from the prison’s dock.
Relatives had said that the two men grew up together and lived like brothers.
The convict’s appeal was presented by attorney Nigel Hughes.
