Convicted by a jury yesterday afternoon for raping a 14-year-old girl two years ago, Esmond Kwesi Slowe now awaits sentencing for the offence after his attorney requested the preparation of a probation report.
After about three hours of deliberations, the 12-member mixed jury returned a majority verdict (11 to 1), convicting Slowe on the charge of sexually penetrating a child under the age of 16.
The man was charged with committing the offence on December 16th, 2016.
His attorney, Maxwell McKay, however, asked Justice Jo-Ann Barlow to defer sentencing to facilitate a probation report on his client.
His request was granted and the judge subsequently adjourned the matter until December 14th at 9.30 am for presentation of that report and also the victim impact statement.
An expressionless Slowe, who had previously been on bail, was then informed by Justice Barlow that he would be remanded to prison to await sentence.
The state’s case was led by Prosecutor Seeta Bishundial, who appeared in association with Abigail Gibbs.
The trial proceedings were heard in-camera at the Sexual Offences Court of the High Court in Georgetown.
