Man remanded over alleged cannabis in food at court

A man was on Friday remanded for allegedly introducing cannabis to a prisoner of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court lockups.

It is alleged that on December 11, 2018, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court lockups, Chris Arthur introduced cannabis to a prisoner.

Arthur pleaded not guilty to the charge read to him by Magistrate Leron Daly of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

According to police prosecutor Sanj Singh, on the day in question, Arthur attempted to enter the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court but was denied access because of his dress code.

However, he asked several persons to deliver the food to the lockups but persons reportedly refused. He then asked a man for assistance and upon delivering the food, which was in a black plastic bag, a police officer who searched the food discovered that it contained what was suspected to be cannabis inside. The substance was wrapped in paper and was stuffed in the food. Arthur admitted to the offence and was arrested.

Arthur was remanded to jail and was told to return to court on January 18, 2018 for his next hearing.
