Brother’s keeper accused of attempting to bribe police

A mother of two was yesterday placed on bail after she allegedly attempted to bribe a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer to cover-up her brother’s previous convictions on a character certificate.

Bibi Azimulla, 39, of 916 New Area, East Berbice, allegedly offered to pay agent Leslyn Halley-Smith of the CID, $20,000 to cover-up previous convictions on her brother Azaad Azimulla’s character certificate.

Azimulla pleaded not guilty to the charge which was read to her by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. The police prosecutor had no objections to bail being granted.

Azimulla was placed on $50,000 bail and will have to return to court on January 2nd, 2018.
