This is the time for politicians to see each other as stakeholders in Guyana’s fledgling democracy

Dear Editor,

Now that the Opposition PPP/C has won the no-confidence motion against the Government and the APNU+AFC Government of President David Granger has fallen, let us not take this time to gloat but to reflect on the outcome as we gear up towards general elections in 2019.

Clearly, the APNU+AFC have not listened to the electorate during the last local government elections nor to its own MPs but may have sidelined them leading to one dissenting and voting with the PPP/C.

Things were clearly not well in the APNU+AFC Coalition’s camp.

Had the APNU+AFC Government reached out and work together with the Opposition PPP/C, listening to them and taking them seriously instead of the hubris displayed, then the Government may not have fallen.

With fresh elections looming in 2019, I am sure many would say that this is not the time for consensus politics whereby politicians work together (co-operate) to build trust, mutual understanding and mutual respect.

This is exactly the time for the politicians to see each other not as enemies but as stakeholders in Guyana’s fledgling democracy. They need to reach across the political divide and unite the Guyanese people.

Yours faithfully,

Sean Ori
