President distributed commemorative coins to mark Press Association anniversary

President David Granger last Sunday, presented the Guyana Press Association (GPA) with commemorative coins and lapel pins in the run-up to the Association’s 75th anniversary, a release from the Ministry of the Presidency said.

Next year, the Press Association will be observing its 75th anniversary and this is the first time the Association has been honoured with commemorative coins, the release said.

The coins were presented to the Executive of the GPA and members of the media at the President’s annual Media Brunch at State House, Georgetown.

“You have received [lapel] pins of the Guyana Press Association (GPA) and coins and I would like to feel that this starts a year of preparation, a year of celebration for your 75th anniversary,” President Granger said.

The Head of State also committed government’s support to publish some form of history relative to the association so that young members of the profession could appreciate the developments over the last 75 years.

“I had promised to provide money for the training of the Press Association.   I’m committed to providing assistance to help you to publish your history of the Press Association and I’m also committed to assisting in strengthening one of the four pillars of journalism and the first is schooling,” he said.

“…education is important and I would like to feel that everyone entering the profession of journalism is given some training, education some schooling in the principles of journalism,” he said.
