The current leadership of GECOM has failed the Guyanese people

Dear Editor,

I am not astonished at the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) position regarding its constitutional mandate to be prepared for, and be ready to conduct elections. This was expected, particularly in light of the unilateral appointment of the Chairman.

GECOM must understand that its power is derived from the Constitution of Guyana. While individual commissioners may have partisan agendas, it is incumbent upon the permanent bureaucracy to maintain neutrality and preparedness. Theirs must be a zealous protection of the Commission’s mandate.

Regrettably, the current leadership of GECOM has utterly failed the Guyanese people in this regard. To Guyanese, GECOM must represent an independent, non-partisan constitutional body whose principal objective is to conduct free, fair and independent elections. Is that too much to ask?

Yours faithfully,

Kowlasar Misir
