Logger fined for stabbing man to protect sister

A logger who admitted to stabbing another man in a bid to protect his sister was yesterday fined $50,000 for the crime.

Salan Domingo, 21, accepted the charge that on February 19th, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Rayon Smith at Kwebanna, in the Moruca sub-district of Region One.

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan read the charge to Domingo and later handed down the sentence.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield told the court that on day in question, there was an exchange of words between Domingo and Smith over Domingo’s sister, who was present. As a result, Domingo became annoyed and attacked Smith with a knife. The prosecutor noted that Smith was stabbed under his left arm and Domingo escaped afterward. He was later apprehended by public-spirited persons.

Asked by the magistrate why he committed the stabbing, Domingo stated that he was trying to protect his sister. “Because I already get a sister wah get pregnant for a school boy and ah didn’t want that happen fah mi lil sis,” he said.

He was later fined $50,000 with an alternative of eight weeks in jail if he cannot pay the fine. He was also given one week to pay the fine.
