Independence defeated Mc Gill Super Stars by three wickets at the Joe Vieira Park yesterday to secure the inaugural West Demerara Cricket Association/Agape Lumber Yard T20 knockout title.

Independence won the toss and invited Mc Gill to take first strike who posted 140-8 from their allotted overs.

In reply, Independence reached 142-7 in 19.2 overs.

Mc Gill found themselves struggling at 39-4 after Ewrit Samuels dismissed both openers, the father and son duo, Travis and Sudesh Persaud for seven and 14 respectively.

Off-spinner, Reaz Esau further halted Mc Gill’s scoring with three quick wickets.

However, Man-of-the-Match Prahalad Singh struck an unbeaten 56 that helped Mc Gill score 100 runs in the last 10 overs.

Singh smashed six sixes and two fours during his 23-ball innings while Keshram Seyhodan supported with a compact 25 before a spectacular catch on the boundary ended his march.

Esau ended with 3-17 while Samuels and Ricky Sargent took two wickets each.

In the chase, opener Vivian Beckles hit the first ball of the chase down the long off boundary for a six.

He scored a 27-ball 53 and his half century was laced with eight fours and three sixes before a catch on the boundary ropes by Azar Deen ended his innings.

Mahendra Dhanpaul supported with 31 while Travis Narine and Samuels ensured their side victory with unbeaten knocks of 14 and 16 respectively.

Sponsor of the tournament, Ganesh Lahka deemed the tournament a success and commended the players for an exceptional tournament while WDCA President, Anand Sanasie who flew in after a West Indies Cricket Board meeting directly to the venue said the tournament has satisfied his expectations and showcased the talent in the zone.

In the third place playoffs, Cornelia Ida (CI) defeated New Windsor by five wickets. New Windsor won the toss and batted, scoring 103 all out in 14.5 overs, one ball short of their revised quota. CI responded with 104-5 in 11.3 overs

Only Dialall Rajpat (35) and Roger Henry (27) offered support to Rickey Dhanpaul (55) as Akshaya Persaud took five wickets for just four runs from 10 balls.

In reply, Naveed Ali steered his side to victory with 55 consisting of six fours and four sixes.
