When the Inner Wheel Club of Georgetown hosts its Annual Hat Show and Garden Party on Saturday at the Promenade Gardens, three new prizes will be up for grabs.

The event has traditionally featured a hat competition for adults and children in the three categories: elegant, topical and original. However, in a press release issued yesterday by Sinikka Henry, the Secretary of the Inner Wheel Club of Georgetown, it was announced that this year there will be additional trophies: The Cicely Harding Prize and the Sheila King Prize, as well as a group prize for which a group or a family may enter.

It was noted that the prizes named after Harding and King are intended to honour them as up to last year they regularly participated in the competition, “displayed unique hats and delighted the crowd with their cheerful performances.”

The release added that the contest would also recognise the most environmentally conscious candidate, who demonstrates the artistic use of recycled materials. “Colourful elegant designs have stood out in particular, but the original and topical ones make a lasting impression, too,” it said, while, reminding that one year Harding, who is in her 80s, wore a creation made entirely of plastic bottles and plastic packaging waste, depicting the deplorable state of Georgetown at the time due to the garbage.

The release said contestants can register for the competition on the day itself and invited them to do so from 2.30 pm. Registration closes at 3.30 pm.

According to the release, the Inner Wheel Club of Georgetown is a 34-year-old charitable organisation that raises funds in order to make an impact in the lives of the less fortunate through scholarships for young adults seeking training in the fields of education and medicine. The annual Hat Show and Garden Party is its largest fundraiser.

Tickets for entry are $300, while children under five years can enter free of charge. Tea is also available for a contribution of $3,000 at the Tea Stall and there will also be a Home-made Ice Cream Stall, a Games Stall and a Sweet & Savoury Stall. Music will be provided by the Guyana Police Force Band. The event will run until 6 pm.
