The Queen’s College field, which was previously in dire need of rehabilitation, is nearing completion, according to Chairman of the school’s Board, Alfred Granger.

In April, 2017, Stabroek News had reported on the poor condition of the field, which facilitates the school’s sports and physical education programme.

When Stabroek News contacted Granger to enquire about the progress of the field’s rehabilitation works, the Chairman stated that the field is almost completed. He added that the eastern side of the field has been cleared and the pitch, which is currently being worked on, had been used just a few weeks ago for a cricket match.

He mentioned that the western field is also being worked on. “We have a big roller, rolling the western field right now and that should be completed by (this)  week,” he stated.

While the work on the field appears to be progressing in stages, according to Granger, so far, approximately $3.2 million has been spent for the rehabilitation works, and that money has been sourced from donations which are funnelled through the school’s alumni.

The centre of the field where the athletic track will be placed is yet to be completed but works will commence on that part of the field after the eastern and western fields are complete. “We’re going to finish the middle field, which is where we are going to be putting the athletic track but because that requires a little bit more we’re going to do that last,” Granger said.

He further stated that they are hopeful that works would begin on the centre field by next week. “We should be finished east and west field completely and just wait on the grass to grow by the middle of next week actually and then we’re going to go to the middle field and that would take about a week or a week and a half to be finished and it would just be for the grass to grow,” he noted.

The Chairman disclosed that they had sought assistance from the government to erect a fence, along with a few stands, at the back of the compound, but that may be put off until next year, as they would have to submit an estimate to be placed in the 2020 budget.
