A motorcyclist is now dead after he collided with a Route 40 (Kitty – Campbellville) minibus at the intersection of Vlissengen Road and Regent Street.

The cyclist has been identified as 29-year-old Mark Sauers, a car wash owner of Enterprise, East Coast Demerara. The accident occurred around 2 pm.

When Stabroek News arrived at the scene, officers were already present and Sauers had already been pronounced dead by Emergency Medical Technicians.

According to reports, the deceased, just prior to the accident, was riding motorcycle CJ 3810 and heading north along Vlissengen Road at a fast rate, while minibus BVV 5557 had just turned onto Regent Street. They collided and Sauers’ body was launched into the bus through a side window and back out through the rear window. As a result of the impact, his body was almost split at the waist. One of his arms was severed and landed in the bus.

A pillion rider, who received injuries, was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital. The extent of the rider’s injuries were unknown up to press time.

Traffic lights at the intersection were not working at the time of the accident.

The driver of the minibus, Mark Pansham, told reporters at the scene that the motorcyclist was speeding and he was fearful that he may be placed before the courts even though he was not in the wrong. “To know I was going about 20 to 30 miles an hour and duh man was coming about 100 to 120 and slam into me and now I got to be the one who got to face the music knowing that I ain’t wrong at all,” Pansham said.

The man went on to say that he had about four passengers in his bus at the time of the accident. However, none of the passengers received any injuries. He added that two of the four passengers would be willing to give their account of the accident to have him vindicated.

In 2014, the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) issued a wanted bulletin for Sauers in connection with cocaine found at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. In 2016, he and another man, Rolston Bacchus, 40, were charged with procuring persons to traffic cocaine. However, Sauers was later acquitted of the charge after the main witness recanted his testimony.

Last year, another bulletin was issued by CANU for Sauers and another man, Kelvien Sauers.
