President, Opposition Leader should meet on elections date, GECOM Chairman

Dear Editor,

Now that the CCJ has ruled that the government has been brought down by a no confidence motion and that the appointment of the GECOM chair was not in accordance with the constitutional provisions, the most urgent requirement is for President Granger to meet with the Leader of the Opposition to discuss a date for general elections and a replacement candidate for GECOM Chairman. For the latter, the former Chairman, Dr. Steve Surujbally, should be asked to serve as an interim Chair to preside over the upcoming elections. As for a date for elections, October would be a reasonable compromise, which would be sufficient time to facilitate house-to-house registration and for parties to campaign.

Yours faithfully,
