Man sentenced to time served for killing cook in 2007

Rayon Dick was yesterday morning sentenced to time served for the unlawful killing of cook—Hubert Albert, whom he stabbed back in 2007.

Though initially charged for murder, Dick pleaded to the lesser offence of manslaughter which was accepted by the prosecution and Justice Navindra Singh at the High Court in Georgetown.

He accepted that on November 11th, 2007 at White Creek Backdam, Port Kaituma, North West District, he unlawfully killed Albert called ‘Uncle Bertie.’

Noting the 11 years Dick has been incarcerated awaiting trial, Justice Singh said that that length of time in itself represented a sentence, and in the circumstances would impose a sentence of time served.

He then told the visibly happy Dick that he was free to leave.

Prosecutor Teriq Mohammed said that on the day in question, the offender had stabbed Albert three times.

Dick was represented by defence attorney Mark Conway.

Albert was 55 years old at the time of his death.

It had been reported that the now dead man was cooking in a camp, when a male suspect entered, picked up a knife and inflicted several stab wounds about his body.
