Options for GECOM Chairman

Dear Editor,

Now that the CCJ has spoken, the court has asked that the parties come together and to advise the court on consequential orders on Monday. I would like to present the following recommendations:

1.   Chairman of the Elections Commission Recommendations:

(a)  Let the current chairman remain in office until the next President is sworn into office. He will then resign;

(b)  The current Chairman resigns immediately. The President and Leader of the Opposition ask the former chairman Steve Surujbally to be appointed the interim chairman and to resign after the swearing in of the new President;

(c)   The President and the Opposition Leader meet within 48 hours after Monday, June 24th and agree on six (6) persons to be the new Chairman. The Opposition Leader and the President shall complete this process within one (1) week. The President must select someone from the list within 24 hours of receipt of the list from the Opposition Leader. If the two leaders cannot agree on a list, the Opposition Leader shall submit a list of eligible persons (according to Article 161 (2) within one (1) week from their meeting, and the President shall select one person from the list within 48 hours of receipt of the list. Some of the names I would ask to be considered are Madame Chief Justice, Mr. Christopher Ram, Mr. Rudy Collins, Mr. Paul Chan-A-Sue, Mr. Komal Samaroo, Mr. Clifford Reis, Mr. Bert Sukhai and Mr. Robert Badal.

2.            Holding of Elections Recommendations:

(a)          Parliament should be dissolved on Tuesday, June 25th;

(b)          Elections shall be held on or before August 31st;

Yours faithfully,

Charles Sugrim, CPA
