$10M health centre built at Leonora

A new $10 million health centre building was commissioned on Wednesday at Leonora, on the West Coast of Demerara.

According to a Department of Public Information news report, the facility is expected to provide basic medical health services to residents of Leonora, Edinburg, Stewartville and Uitvlugt.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Regional Executive Officer Jennifer Ferreira-Dougall was reported as telling patients and staff in attendance that they would have to take care of the building, which was constructed as a result of consultation and communication with the government on their part. “We listened to you, the direct beneficiaries of this service entity, and we answered your calls,” Ferreira-Dougall was quoted as saying.

The facility has four rooms, inclusive of a private room for examination.

The report said one of the patients, Bhandmattie Harrygobin, noted that the centre is located in an environmentally friendly area and is very spacious thereby making things easier for all patients. A staffer also voiced similar thoughts, saying that the environment in which they will now function is more comfortable.
